Professor Spyros Maniatis
Professor Spyros Maniatis is the Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), one of the world’s leading independent research institutions for international and comparative law. He is also an Honorary Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), where he previously served as Professor of Intellectual Property Law and Head of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). During his tenure as Head of CCLS, Professor Maniatis oversaw a period of significant expansion and internationalisation. Under his leadership, the Centre grew substantially in size, academic portfolio, and global influence, now supporting more than 1,200 postgraduate students from around 100 jurisdictions. He spearheaded CCLS’s global strategy and established several international programmes, including the CCLS LLM in Paris, the double LLM with the Sorbonne, the double LLM with Singapore Management University, and an executive LLM in Shipping in Piraeus. Professor Maniatis also guided the development of new academic offerings in areas such as shipping, energy, insurance, art law, regulation, and law and language. He was instrumental in launching innovative programmes including the MBA/LLM with ESCP Europe, the Master’s in Compliance and Regulation, and a distance-learning MBA with the University of London. Earlier, as LLM Director, he led the successful transition from the University of London’s intercollegiate LLM to a fully QMUL-based LLM. A leading authority in intellectual property law, Professor Maniatis’s research spans trade marks, unfair competition, innovation and trade, the intersection of intellectual property and competition law, and IP developments in China. His seminal work, Trade Marks in Europe: A Practical Jurisprudence, published its third edition in 2016. He has worked closely with the intellectual property profession, contributing to the Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice with the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys.
