Dr Joe Ageyo

Joe Ageyo is the Editor-in-Chief at the Nation Media Group (NMG), the largest media house in East and Central Africa. In this role, he oversees the editorial direction, newsroom leadership, and content development across print, broadcast, and digital platforms, shaping public discourse and journalistic excellence across the region. With more than 25 years of experience in journalism, Joe is widely recognised as a leading voice in Kenyan media and a pioneer of environmental journalism on television. He began his career at KTN in 2000, where he launched Ecojournal, the first regular environmental feature on Kenyan TV, an achievement that earned him national acclaim and set a new standard for specialised reporting. He later served as Managing Editor at KTN and held senior roles at NTV, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, and Royal Media Services. Joe has co-moderated two Kenyan presidential debates (2013 and 2017) and served on the steering committees shaping these historic national events, affirming his reputation as one of Kenya’s most trusted journalistic voices. He is also an accomplished scholar and author. Joe has contributed chapters to Pioneers, Rebels and a Few Villains: 150 Years of Journalism in Africa and Media Pandemics: Seeking Journalistic Answers in Eastern Africa. His academic work includes publications such as “Beyond Access: A Critique of the Legalist Approach to Dissemination of Climate Change Information in Kenya” in the Sustainability Journal. He recently graduated with a PhD in Media Studies at Daystar University. Joe holds an MSc in Environmental Governance from the University of Manchester, a Bachelor of Agribusiness Management from Egerton University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, and a certificate in Environmental Diplomacy from the University of Geneva. His accolades include the Environmental Journalist of the Year Award (2001), a World Bank Fellowship to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, and fellowships with both the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) and the Aspen Institute’s Catto Fellowship.
